In this analysis, I will be looking at the brand logos of three popular fashion magazines: Cosmopolitan, Vogue, and Elle. This will allow me to gain a better understanding of why mastheads hold massive importance, impacting the image and branding of magazines.
What is a Masthead?
A masthead is essentially the logo or title of a magazine. It is what creates the brand name, its recognition, and its brand image. It is the essence and aim of the magazine, giving it its identity. The masthead is also, apart from the cover model, the first thing that catches the audience's eye.
The masthead analysis research has allowed me to not only delve into the history of a few famous magazines like Vogue but also guided me on the established codes and conventions when generating a magazine identity. The masthead is more than 50% of the magazine's brand image and identity and it is highly crucial to choose one that is specific to the theme and history. I’ve also decided to make a few design sketches of the masthead alone to get an idea of what I would like the final title to look like and how much space it should cover on the front page. It is also important for me to generate a masthead that fits the convention of fashion magazines and the actual meaning makes sense, giving a brief idea of what the rest of the magazine will provide to the audience.
